The two domains have shaped the image of their region far beyond its borders, now transitioning from family to investor hands. Domaine Gauby, a biodynamic pioneer, has always been synonymous with artisanal wines of world-class quality—yet still reasonably priced, with offerings like the Les Calcinaires Côtes Catalanes Rouge 2021 starting at around €22 in the German specialist retail market. Marjorie Gallet, among others, gained her experience (including in biodynamics) there before founding her own winery, Roc des Anges, over 20 years ago, praised for its timeless elegance. Together with her husband, Stéphane, they have been managing the operation—until now.
Both wineries now have new owners: According to the French publication La Revue du Vin de France, Gérard Gauby has sold his 45-hectare domain to two French investors: Yann Mazabraud, Vice President of the biotech company Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, and François Baulé of the investment firm Eximium. Baulé already has a foothold in the wine business with the (biodynamically managed) Les Clos Maurice estate in Saumur-Champigny. It is said that Lionel, Gauby's son, did not want to take over the family winery, and it is also understood that the investors are to provide new financial resources. Gauby himself assures that he will provide advisory support to the new owners for several years.
At the approximately 55-hectare Roc des Anges estate, the majority ownership is transferring into the hands of food entrepreneur Thibault Ponthier. Similarly, the two founders intend to assist the winery for several more years to facilitate the transition. In both cases, the aim is to maintain the high quality standards with the help of the current winemakers, ideally ensuring continuity. The success of this endeavor will ultimately be revealed by time. AW
