Beyond Cavallino, see our newline from November 6th, Freixenet announced last week the construction of a second winery in Croatia on the Adriatic island of Vis, which was long closed to foreigners for military reasons. No details about construction were revealed. It was merely stated that negotiations with the authorities were in progress. Greeks first brought the vine to the island several hundred years before Christ and it is today the home of the white cultivar Vugava, which Marcel Guigal believes may be Viognier. Other local varieties such as Crljenak, which science has recently established as identical to Zinfandel, and the closely related Plavac Mali, will also be central to the new winery s plans.
