Viña Cousiño Macul celebrated its 150th anniversary yesterday with the launch of its new icon wine: Lota. The 2004, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon
and 15% Merlot from the estate's vineyards in Macul and Buin in the Maipo Valley, is to be sold in the States at $110 (85 ) per bottle. According to managing director Arturo Cousiño the name Lota, which is a town in the southern part of Chile, alludes to the importance this region played in the history of his family, which once had coal mines, built railways and managed forest there. Winemaker Matías Rivera says that Lota reflects the elegance and personality of Cousiño Macul new quality efforts.
