Alcohol remains a federal issue in the European community

Europe recently confirmed in its Communication on Alcohol & Health that it had no intention of introducing harmonised legislation on alcoholic abuse, emphasizing that

such policy will remain in the hands of individual state governments. However, a forum on Alcohol and Health will soon be created, uniting both experts in the field and health representatives from the member states. Although there is a latent tone of mistrust in some quarters, the issue is not alcohol itself, but addressing misuse, which is becoming a major issue in many countries.
