Agriculture minister plans a Vin de France

by Hervé Lalau

Dominique Boussereau, the French Agricultural Minister, announced plans to create a vin de France similar to the designation approved in Spain early this year that is now being contested in court. The new appellation, supported by shippers, would allow producers to blend vin de pays from different regions into a single wine, thus providing brands the economies of scale that few European wineries enjoy. His more far reaching proposals to simplify the myriad of French appellational hierarchies into three categories was rejected by wine growers last week. However, the group did agree to debate the proposals when they meet again next February.
